‘All my heroes die alone,’ sings Taylor Swift in The Archer. I thought of that song when reading The Denial of Death by American cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker. The best remedy for fear of death, he says, is to strive for heroism. But what if Swift is right and all heroes die alone? Will culture then become even more fearful of death?
